about

“Enemy of my sleep, can you tell what has changed in me?”

Moscow Youth Cult return with their third studio album - LIMINA - an exhilarating record of memory and oblivion.

"You go in search of half-heard, half-remembered things, enthralled by snatches of sound from a dream... you may hear others as they clip through the walls into unknown space, you always enter the Backrooms alone..."

The duo - Jon Dix and Dan O’Donnell-Smith - became fascinated with the online folklore of the Backrooms creepypasta: the endless liminal space of auto generated offices bathed in fluorescence. If someone enters this space it is possible for them to ‘noclip’ out of reality into unknown areas.

Thematically, LIMINA explores a hidden obverse, where memory functions like VR and is used as a vehicle to explore the corridors of the Backrooms and peel back the thin veil that separates our reality from that which may lie beyond.

"From the soft black you sing.."

The lo-fi aesthetic of the album is the result of countless hours of processing voice, guitars, synths and percussion on 4-track cassette recorders. Each round of transference via tape carried across the compositions with newly collected audio artefacts, a process which could be repeated to the point of mechanical failure.

“Into the endless field..”

The ambiance of nature permeates LIMINA through a variety of field recordings made by MYC that were gathered from far-flung locations across the globe and are married to documented sounds from closer to home. Layered compositions fold time and place together, where church bells recorded through an extraction fan in Zurich mix with a nightly frog chorus from Madagascar; monkeys and birds chattering in Sri Lanka get swallowed into the waves along a blustery Kent coast; the smokey bustle of our industrial cities falls away into the stillness of the Suffolk fens, only to re-emerge in a wash of synths, percussion and tape machine artefacts.

"Can you feel, I'm on my way?"

Presented on cassette from Woodford House, LIMINA is a sequence of electronic pop songs - connected by experimental lo-fi collages - which speaks to the heart that yearns and the mind that searches. An embodiment of limitless spaces - the backrooms - where memory and forgetting form an endless field.

MYC have previously released music on Lo Recordings, Hello Thor and Salmon Universe. Their track ‘Survivasm’ gained cult status after featuring in the videogame Saints Row IV, and previous album ‘Brutalist’ was launched via a celebrated show in Nottingham’s iconic Nottingham Contemporary gallery. They are based in London and Zurich.
